And I'm not at all certain even Dan knows where the handle or the key is"). I'm not sure I can find the key to unlock Dan's heart. Knox tells her daughter that Dan has "a lot locked up inside him.

One such exchange inspires the title (Mrs. Mary Kate and her mother (who is pregnant) engage in ongoing and repetitious conversations about why they adopted Dan ("Aren't I enough for you?" she asks her mother). The narrative chronicling the boy's thoughts and his fears that this family, like others before, will return him to "the state" is relatively convincing, but the Knox family comes across as stereotypical. Though his new parents may be welcoming (albeit overly angelic), his snide older "sister," Mary Kate, is not. Sometimes, kids are smarter and braver than their parents.Neufeld's ( Lisa, Bright and Dark) rather flat novel centers on Dan, a boy of indeterminate age who has lived in numerous foster homes and has just been adopted by the Knox family. If everyone had just listened to her in the beginning, things would have been better. The description of the characters is excellent, though the setting could have used a little work. The author's style made me empathize with Lisa I wanted her to get well. This conflict is shown both internally, since Lisa's disease is mental, and externally, because Lisa tries killing herself twice. The problem is that her friends can't convince Lisa's parents she's ill. Lisa's actions and thoughts throughout the ordeal are perfectly portrayed. Lisa manages to stay close to and confide in her three friends, who are the only ones who help her. Slowly, her grades start slipping, she loses her boyfriend and she attempts suicide. Lisa is a smart girl, involved with school, her friends and boyfriend. The reader also portrays what it is like to care for a mentally ill loved one. The novel shows that things don't always go the way you want or hope, but with time and determination you can make people understand. Lisa, Bright and Dark is the remarkable, fictional tale of Lisa Shilling and her three friends who "walk with her where adults fear to tread."
