His name is DJ, he is no longer the head cheerleader, and he is finally being himself. On the first day of school, Sebastian’s crush, Darcy comes into the room and everything goes quiet. I have read some of his adult romances but this YA novel was just. JR Gray is one of those authors that can totally pull you in and make you fall head over heels for his literary characters. That’s mostly true of any JR Gray book and that’s what keeps me coming back for more. I cried and lamented and laughed and rejoiced. Because if we can’t live our truth, is it truly living? Here begins a story of hate, homophobia, prejudice, ignorance, love, acceptance, understanding, and education. And that was more than DJ had and if that was all he’d ever have with DJ, that could be enough. Sebastian, though an outlier, he did have friends. Sebastian who had crushed on Darcy their entire junior year. Alone until Sebastian sits down with him for lunch.

Personally, I would have never had that kind of courage. Try entering your senior year with a new haircut. Ridiculed and taunted maybe, but not ostracized. The “weird” kids were the drama and art club, chess and mathletics. How Can You Hate What You Don’t Understand?ĭo you remember high school? Did you love it or hate it? Were you one of the popular kids? A member of the “in” group? Or were you an outlier? And were you just an outlier or were you actively shunned? Huge difference btw.
